GI Doctor Diet Tips for Good Digestion

November 19, 2021

Man explaining his stomach issues to a doctor

It’s normal to occasionally experience digestive issues, such as an upset stomach, gas, heartburn, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. However, frequently experiencing such symptoms can disrupt your life.

There is no time like the present to start thinking about your GI health. Keeping your gut healthy is relatively simple, and your GI doctor can help you substantially reduce your risk of developing severe GI issues.

For better digestion, your GI doctor can recommend simple dietary and lifestyle changes. Let’s talk about diet tips that your GI doctor can advise you on for good digestion.

Incorporate A High Fiber Diet Food Into Your Diet

Dietary fibers are beneficial for good digestion. A balanced diet consists of both soluble and insoluble fibers that can help with faster digestion. Soluble fibers add bulk to your stool by absorbing water. In contrast, insoluble fibers keep your food moving along your GI tract. A high fiber diet can regulate bowel movement and reduce your risk of developing GI disorders, such as acid reflux, ulcers, and inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS).

Your GI doctor will likely recommend a daily intake of about 30 grams of dietary fiber. Whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables are a good source of fiber. Drinking plenty of water after eating a high-fiber diet will increase your bowel movements.

Limit The Amount of Processed Food

Eating a typical western diet makes you more vulnerable to digestive disorders. The typical western diet is high in saturated fats, refined carbs, and food additives.

Processed foods contain artificial sweeteners that contribute to digestive problems such as bloating and diarrhea. Consuming fast foods that are high in saturated fats, sugars, and salts can cause constipation and gas.

Your GI doctor will recommend limiting consumption of a typical western diet, fast foods, processed foods, red meat, and processed meats such as salami, bacon, and hotdogs for optimal digestion.

Incorporate Probiotics In Your Diet

Your gut has two types of bacteria: healthy bacteria that help with digestion and harmful bacteria that cause digestive problems. Probiotic foods contain beneficial bacteria that fight off harmful bacteria in your gut and improve digestion. Your GI doctor will recommend fermented foods like probiotic yogurt, sourdough bread, kefir, miso, garlic, onion, and sauerkraut for gut nourishment and optimal digestion.

Limit FODMAP Diet

If you suffer from digestive issues, your GI doctor likely will recommend eating a low FODMAP diet.  FODMAP consists of hard-to-digest carbohydrates such as fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. The low FODMAP diet can relieve you from symptoms of IBS such as abdominal cramping, bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Your doctor can also recommend you FODMAP diet for a short time to identify the trigger foods you should eliminate from your diet for healthy digestion.
